Shakira receives Award for Entertainer of the Year 2011

Massachusetts .- The singer, songwriter and philanthropist Saturday Shakira received the award for Artist of the Year 2011, awarded by a foundation of Harvard University.

The Harvard Foundation, which is the center of the university to undertake initiatives of intercultural arts and sciences, presented the award to the Colombian star during a ceremony.

The director of the Foundation, S. Allen Counter said Shakira, who has sold over 50 million albums worldwide, was honored for his "distinguished record of creativity, as well as charitable contributions.

After receiving the award, Shakira challenged Harvard students to do more to improve education in developing countries.

Shakira created the Pies Descalzos Foundation, to provide education and food to children in poor areas of Colombia. It is also goodwill ambassador for United Nations Fund for Assistance to Children's Fund (Unicef).

Previous winners of the award given by Harvard include Sharon Stone, Will Smith, Jackie Chan and Herbie Hancock. Latin Americans who have received the award include the Cuban-American Andy Garcia, Salma Hayek Mexican and Wyclef Jean.
